When walking through a grocery store, there are many options to choose from to create a balanced meal. When creating a balanced meal, it is important to include a food from each food group.

Each product belongs to a food group, and some even belong to both. Our I-Spy food groups challenge can help you practice identifying which food groups each item belongs to. First, let’s review some examples:

  • Fruits: apples, bananas, kiwi, oranges, mango, blueberries
  • Vegetables: carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, pumpkin, peppers
  • Grains: bread, crackers, pasta, muffins, rice, popcorn
  • Protein: steak, chicken, turkey, tuna, eggs, beans, nuts
  • Dairy: yogurt, cheese, milk

Sometimes in a balanced meal, you eat each food group as a separate part of the meal, sometimes the food can include multiple food groups. Let’s breakdown a cheeseburger to see the food groups:

  • Bun: grains
  • Hamburger: protein
  • Cheese: dairy

There are three food groups and depending if you like things like lettuce or onion on your burger, there could be a 4th food group (vegetables).

Let's try to test your knowledge in our I-Spy Challenge.

HERE'S HOW YOU DO IT!

  1. Color the FRUITS - red
  2. Color the DAIRY - blue
  3. Color the VEGETABLES - green
  4. Circle the PROTEIN
  5. Put a BOX aroudn the GRAINS
